Fire TV runs Android underneath and accepts third-party players through the Downloader app — install Downloader, enable installing unknown apps, enter a numeric code. Roku is a closed platform and does not, which is a genuine constraint worth knowing before buying hardware for this purpose.

What to establish before committing

Test at eight in the evening, on a weekday, on the device that will live behind your television, connected the way it will really be connected. And run a short term first. The saving on an annual plan is rarely large enough to justify committing before you know how a service behaves on your particular connection at your particular time of night.
